Telus Spark is the perfect place to take your little children to… or your big adults!

Located next to the Calgary Zoo, Telus Spark is Calgary’s newly constructed Science Centre, built on 18+ acres of reclaimed land.

The Centre is highly interactive, with over 100 hands-on exhibits that are suitable for children (and adults) of all ages. With four exhibit galleries, the Creative Kids Museum, the HD digital Dome Theatre and a four acre outdoor park with the Brainasium, there’s something to entertain and challenge every member of the family.

Telus Spark was easily North Nomad’s favourite attraction out of the many we checked out through Visit Calgary.

But which exhibit was his favourite was hard to say. We visited Being Human, Earth & Sky, Energy & Innovation, and the outdoor park Brainasium.

In Being Human, we measured our stress levels in different situations. Sitting at station with two computer screens, I sent potentially stressful images to North Nomad, who rested his palm on a sweat detector.

When I sent him a picture of a person standing at great heights, he almost sent the tester off the scale! The image I reacted to was a sandwich with lots of little fish in it. North Nomad is afraid of heights, and I’m a vegan, so we were impressed with the accuracy!

At Earth & Sky, we went on an exploratory journey through Albert’s geology and landscape, creating mini rivers, havoc with comets, and made our own constellations.

Energy & Innovation was a surreal world of gadgets, power, and organised chaos that the little kids loved. The bigger kids (and adults) got to test out their muscles in generating electricity.

Outside in the Brainasium park, we enjoyed the gorgeous Calgary sun. North Nomad used his strength (or science, one should say when at Telus Spark) to move five tonnes of rock with no exertion. We may have to go with Telus’ science explanation on this one…

And if you plan on going without children, we recommend attending the second Thursday of every month from 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. This is the Science Centre’s “adults only” night, with live entertainment and cocktails. We were quite disappointed our visit to Calgary didn’t coincide with this night!

  1. This sounds very much like the Exploratorium that we have here in San Francisco and it is such a fun place to visit! They even have adults only on Thursday nights which I really love!

    • I love the adults only nights at museums and science centres! I do like the excitement and joy kids bring to these places. It’s just nice being able to have a drink and the entertainment that gets put on with it though. 🙂
